A well-attended launch of my new book held at the Alexander Centre in Faversham on Wednesday 13 May. Some 75 people attended for a busy two hours of speeches and conversation. Ian Coulson, President of the Kent Archaeological Society, gave a brief summary of Faussett’s career and his importance to the history of archaeology, before wishing the book all possible success. He was followed by John Owen, FSA, co-founder and present chairman of the Faversham Historians, who acknowledged the publication as a significant addition to the collective knowledge of the history of Kent. I then thanked particular individuals who had made the evening such a success from behind the scenes, before then proceeding to extend a sincere personal welcome to the family members who were present, including Tom and Richard Godfrey-Faussett, both 5x great-grandsons of the antiquary himself. I thanked them for their hospitality and their making available to me the family papers, including two volumes of Bryan Faussett’s original correspondence, which had got the writing of the biography off to such a flying start. Richard Godfey-Faussett then replied by saying that although the family had been only too aware for far too long of their illustrious ancestor, it had fallen to a stranger to appear in their lives, rigorously gather and analyse the many disparate sources, and bring them all together as a full-length book; for this he and all the family would remain eternally grateful.
