Faversham Society: review of Tracing Your Kent Ancestors
After an introduction on the basics of getting started and the inherent research problems in family history, Dr Wright deals with principal national and local basic sources: cathedral records, directories, newspapers and parish registers to name but a few. He also gives tips on searching maps, local trades and industry.
National records follow from Domesday through mediaeval, manorial, the professions and armed services, and taxation. Included is a directory of archives, libraries and societies, followed by a general bibliography and gazetteer of Kent’s ancient parishes, plus an index, all of which gives the new researcher great help in getting started and progressing.
The author is a professional genealogist, historian and writer whose earlier work on the Kent antiquary Bryan Faussett was much admired.
